BOX WORK

40 x 28 x 8.8cm. wood, plaster, acrylic, glass, collage

Several of the Nature Table paintings depict boxes and these new boxes have been made in conjunction with the painting. They are intended to be shown with the Nature Table series of paintings.
........

The plaster apples in this box were cast from a box of apples, apples that I had grown in my garden and had stored for eating in the future.
Apples can be kept well in a cool place, I had learned this as a child but there was a damaged apple amongst these and it had spread to the others. My grandparents had a dozen or so apple trees and I used to help them pick and box up apples to keep for the winter.

My ancestors had owned a greengrocers from 1844 for around a hundred years, I am looking at a promotional card for the business which I have inherited. It has foxing marks and I am comparing them to spots on the apples gained through the passage of time and then I notice the liver spots starting to appear on my hands.

I grew up in a coastal town, the same town where my grandparents lived and the same town where the greengrocers had been. When coastal towns were holiday destinations the experience of seasons was more pronounced than nowadays. Busy in the summer and abandoned in the winter.
The seasons were also more significant to the greengrocer when much of the produce was only available at certain times of the year.
